SMITH, Ernest K. “Ernie” B.A. M.Sc. - On January 1, 2018 in his 70th year at his home surrounded by his loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed by his partner, Tammy Hamilton, her family mother Pauline van der Grinten, sons Alexander Hamilton (Brittany Howlett), Matthew (Siobhan) Hamilton, grandson Finn and many cousins. Dear friend of Carol and Dave Harrod, Sandi McCormack, Arnie Norris, Fred & Linda Dainard. Predeceased by his parents, Ernest and Margaret Smith, and by brother Hugh A. Patterson (Donna).

Born and raised in Niagara Falls, upon graduating from Stamford C.V.I. in 1968, Ernie went on to Waterloo Lutheran University, obtaining his Bachelors Degree in 1971. He then earned his Teaching Certification at Brock University in 1973, and a Masters Degree from Niagara University in 1977. After spending 2 years teaching at Prince of Wales School in Thorold, Ernie began in 1975 a 30-year career as a Canadian Immigration officer serving in many positions at various locations in Canada and the world. He acted as an attaché to Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau while serving in India. Upon retirement Ernie went on to serve as a visa officer at Canadian Embassy’s around the world. Ernie was an appointed member of the Advisory Committee for the Police Foundations program at Niagara College and most recently was a Commissioner with the Niagara Falls Bridge Commission from 2009-2017. Ernie will be remembered for his many kindnesses and generosity. He was a true gentleman in every sense of the word.

Cremation has taken place. Ernie’s family will receive friends at the MORSE & SON FUNERAL HOME, 5917 Main Street on Sunday January 7th from 2 pm to 4 pm. Private service to take place. Internment of cremated remains at Fairview Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish may make a memorial donation to Project SHARE, the Niagara Falls Humane Society or the Salvation Army. The family requests no flowers.
